Meet Shelly
A Legacy of Creativity
From the time I can remember, I have loved crafting and creating! Growing up I was inspired by the women in my life. Some family, and some well-known creative women. In addition to loving creating, I am a people person. I love meeting new friends, listening to their life stories and learning how I can support their dreams, goals and visions.
Family Roots in Craftsmanship
My maternal great grandmother, Mabel, Mammo to us, made the most beautiful Christmas ornaments some of which hang on our families trees to this day. She also quilted and was always creating something special with the supplies that she had in her home or outdoors on the farm. I loved going to the farm and spending time in her home. It always felt warm and welcoming, smelled of delicious goodness, and felt like home. I can still picture and feel those feelings in my hearts mind. Some of Mabel's daughters, including my Gram, Helen and her younger sister Ethel carried on Mammo's love of creating. They hand quilted, stitch by stitch, the most beautiful projects! I remember my Gram teaching my Mom to quilt, and how much they enjoyed the process and gifting their beautiful creations to family and friends.
Entrepreneurial Heritage
My paternal great grandmother, Annie Mutzabaugh, was a true pioneer. She was the force behind the family butchering and grocery businesses that were staples in our community for over 100 years! I have always felt such admiration for her entrepreneurial spirit! Creativity, entrepreneurship and community have deep familial roots in my life. I grew up helping in the butcher shop, working at the grocery store and my very favorite part was the people.
The Birth of Seventh + Lavender
In 2016 a little voice kept telling me to start a business and I don't know about you, but sometimes it takes me a bit to listen to the whispers that come to me. Later that year I opened Seventh + Lavender, a creative workshop studio where people could gather to create and relax. We did things like wreath making, painting, furniture refinishing, paper crafting, candle making to even meal prepping! In 2019 we moved to the quaint revitalized small town of Newport, nestled along the beautiful Juniata River where we felt at home.
Discovering a New Passion
While I have always been a craft enthusiast, I had never really done much fiber related crafting beyond cross stitch and some very basic sewing. That all changed when I found Humble Stitch, a local quilt/yarn shop! I began taking every class that I could and over the course of a few years found a community of stitchers who loved and shared a passion for stitching! To me this was like opening Pandora's box! I spend much of my free time with my stitching friends who patiently shared their lifelong knowledge with this eager beginner!
A New Chapter: Humble Stitch
In early 2022 that little voice whispered again that it was time for a change. I had spent 25+ years in the commercial/industrial mechanical world in sales and leadership, and something was telling me that it was time to try something new. Yes, at 57 I got my real estate license, left corporate life and was letting go and letting God show me where His whisper was leading me. That is where a new journey began. In the summer of 2023 the opportunity for Seventh + Lavender to acquire Humble Stitch arose, and a very dear friend of mine and I joined forces to keep this "happy place" as many we and so many customers considered it, part of our community.
Building a Creative Community
With the support of several extremely talented ladies who also loved Humble Stitch, we jumped into learning all about quilt/yarn shop ownership, and let me tell you, there was and still is A LOT to learn! From quilting, embroidering, knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, and more to purchasing, merchandising, accounting, software, class content and creation, marketing, and too many other things to list the learning is constant! Faith, prayer, grace, and the support of our team and Humble Stitchers, as we lovingly refer to our customers, are what has seen us through this first year of shop ownership.
More Than Just a Shop
Humble Stitch is so much more than a quilt/yarn shop. It is a safe space, a home away from home, a happy place where stitchers of all levels of capability melt together and become one big family! Upon entering you will feel the warmth and be welcomed with a friendly greeting because we truly are so happy to see you! Ultimately, Humble Stitch is a cozy nook where anyone can come to immerse themselves in a cocoon of creativity. Our vision is for this happy stitching oases to be part of the fabric of the community for generations to come.
